In short

  • Coaching is not therapy, counselling or medical care.
  • If you are in crisis, coaching is not the right support. Urgent help is listed below.
  • What you say stays confidential, except where someone is at serious risk.
  • You can raise a concern about a coach at any time.

If you need help now

If you need help now: in an emergency, call 999. For urgent medical help, call NHS 111. To talk to someone at any time, day or night, call Samaritans free on 116 123.

You can also contact your GP, or text SHOUT to 85258 for free, confidential text support.

What coaching is

Coaching is a conversation that helps you think clearly, decide and act on everyday matters such as work, confidence, habits and life changes. Your coach asks questions, offers challenge or space, and helps you choose a next step. You stay in charge of your choices.

What coaching is not

Coaching is not therapy, counselling, psychiatry or medical care. Coaches do not diagnose or treat mental or physical health conditions, prescribe, or give legal or financial advice.

If you have a mental health condition, coaching can sit alongside your care, but it does not replace it. If a coach thinks another kind of support would help you more, they will say so and suggest where to find it.

Confidentiality and its limits

What you say in a session stays between you and your coach. Sessions are not recorded. Your coach keeps notes only with your agreement.

There is one exception. If your coach believes you or someone else is at serious risk of harm, they may share what is needed with the right service, such as emergency services. Wherever possible, they will talk to you first.

Our coaches

We check each coach before they join, including their training, experience and references. Coaches agree to a code of conduct that covers respect, confidentiality and these safeguarding steps. The full coach standard will be published before booking opens.

Raising a concern

If anything in a session made you uncomfortable, or you are worried about a coach’s behaviour, write to [email protected] with “Safeguarding” in the subject line. We aim to reply within one working day. You can also switch to another coach at any time.

Age

Rhubarb is for adults aged 18 and over.
